The
occupational therapists (OTs) and physiotherapists are part of
the multi-professional team at Sobell House. We see patients
in all areas of the palliative care service: the inpatient unit
and the day hospice, as well as in the community and in the acute
hospitals in the Trust. We work in partnership with patients
and their families, aiming to enable people to remain as independent
and fulfilled in their daily occupations and activities as possible.
For the OTs, this would involve assessment and analysis of daily tasks, making
suggestions about alternative ways of managing, or providing resources (such
as equipment or a wheelchair) that might make life easier. In addition to
those activities that are necessary for basic daily living, we also look
at creative and leisure opportunities.

The
physiotherapists use exercise to maintain or improve strength
and mobility, and we are able to advise on and supply a range
of walking and mobility aids. We can offer non-drug alternatives
to pain relief, such as TENS or massage. Together with the OTs,
we are able to teach relaxation techniques, and advise on energy
conservation principles for patients experiencing tiredness and
fatigue.
